The Iowa legislature is currently considering SF2250, a bill that would allow employees, contract employees and volunteers to keep guns in their locked vehicles in their employer’s parking lots. Under current Iowa law an employer can prevent employees from storing guns in their cars on company property. Therefore many Iowans, in order to comply with their company’s no weapons policy cannot carry weapons at all if the majority of their public outings are before or after work.
“The employee, I believe, has a fundamental right on their way to work…on their way home after work to have a weapon as a means of well-being and security.” — Senator Jason Schultz
The proposed law, would still allow an employer to prohibit employees from carrying weapons in the workplace. If passed the law would allow weapons to be carried before and after the work day and left in a locked car in an employee parking lot.
I urge the legislature to pass this bill!
