Infrared investigations have also demonstrated that the tie molecules in the drawn sample are almost completely oriented and stretched thus forming rather rigid bridges between subsequent crystalline blocks of the microfibril.

They were prepared by chlorination of linear polyethylene in solution. The degree of chlorination in our samples were kept fairly low and at most to a few chlorine atoms per 100 carbons. Chlorinated polyethylene offers several advantages over other copolymers for our purpose. First, the chlorination reaction conducted in solution results in the placement of chlorine atoms at random positions along the polyethylene chain. This aspect is important in the interpretation of properties of copolymers in term of their chemical structure.
