She notes that twenty-five years ago Julian Steward called for a revision of basic anthropological concepts and methods of analyzing national levels of integration (see Steward 1973).

It is a somewhat rhetorical question, but not completely misplaced and in any case a question which the "objects" of research are increasingly beginning to pose. What is their benefit from the dissertations, articles, and books written in a language foreign to them, hidden in academic libraries? One can understand that the term "academic colonialism" is used at times for this. 4 They are still accustomed to submit to all that comes from above or from outside, although they may show some resistance, for instance in giving incorrect answers or just by saying what they think outsiders want to hear.

Do we go and look for the lost paradise in exotic places like most of our less privileged compatriots look for kicks in television serials, science fiction, and the drug scene? Does anthropology function to intellectually gifted people as an "escape" from their society? Anyway our understanding of the sensibilities of people in the Third World would increase if we were to be more realistic about our own, and we would, consequently, become more modest in our role as "snoopers" in developing countries.
