It could be argued that in practice the political ramifications of Jesus’s teaching have been profound. The concepts of equality in the sight of God and ‘love your neighbour as yourself are often cited as a main source of inspiration for liberalism and socialism. There may or may not be truth in these assumptions: the point, however, is that, Jesus’s activity was centred on spreading his message in isolation from the particular circumstances of his life; whereas Gandhi’s was almost exactly the reverse.

Jesus resolutely refuses to make any plea – in fact, according to these two Gospels, apart from the words quoted above he says nothing at all when before Pilate. This story is a little expanded by Luke, who says that the statements made include the accusation that, by calling himself the King of the Jews, Jesus Christ was in effect forbidding the Jews to pay their tribute to Caesar. This, clearly, would directly affect Pontius Pilate, the Roman procurator. 24 Jesus is therefore taken to him, but Herod gets no further with the matter in his Assassination_Layout 1 14/08/2010 16:01 Page 43 Mahatma Gandhi / Jesus Christ 43 examination, and Jesus is returned to receive judgement from Pilate.

In the case of Jesus Christ, as he and his followers saw and still see it, his death saved the world by expiating the sins of mankind. Indeed, Jesus’s actions at his trial can only be explained in the context of that message. The priests’ motives in having Jesus crucified are not explicitly covered in the Gospels. However, as well as fearing what they undoubtedly saw as a possible rival centre of attention and source of doctrine, they were probably incensed by Jesus’s cleansing of the temple; the latter would have denuded them of one of their major sources of income, as acceptable offerings were bought by pilgrims at monopoly prices and the profits accrued to the chief priests.
