We certainly cannot afford to follow the deconstructionists into contentedly reading into either texts or lives the opposite of what all the relevant evidence, judged by reasonable, objective criteria, apparently indicates (Gellner, 1992; Harris, 1977).

Neither is philosophically unproblematical (Rawls, 1972; Miller, 1976; Gewirth, 1982). Combined in a single policy discourse, they produce ideological Babel and institutional chaos (Barry in Plant and Barry, 1990; Harris, 1987; Goodin, 1988). On the one hand, the Welfare State seeks to identify and answer objectively definable 'basic needs'. On the other, it urges people to demand more and more of everything from the state 'as of right'. Thus, while yesterday's need becomes tomorrow's right all round, at the same time your rights can be arbitrarily denied by the state because they supposedly conflict with my needs, and spuriously legitimate neglect of my established needs can be justified in terms of your newly authenticated rights.
